Dave Made a Maze (2017)

I kept getting drawn to this film.  I didn’t understand how it would be horror.  In the end, it was definitely a blend of comedy, fantasy, and horror.  Don’t expect crazy blood and guts.  Expect red and pink yarn though.

The film is about Dave making a cardboard maze in his living room and being stuck in this labyrinth that he has somehow created.  His girlfriend Annie is pissed, and terribly confused.  She has Gordon come over and then Leonard who brings his documentary crew and other friends.  Dave implores them not to enter.  When they try to simply shake it or move it, it causes so many bad things in the maze.  Eventually, the group decides to go in to see what the hell is going on.  They enter a cardboard labyrinth full of death traps and other ridiculous things.  There are attacking origami, paper bugs, death-dealing cardboard axes, and even a minotaur.

I know that this may not sound like something that you must see.  You’re wrong.  This is one of the most original films that I have ever seen and a truly fun film.  There are so many fun moments.  On top of that, you truly get lost in this ridiculous fantasy.  And then the film delves into some puppeteering and it really is visually a joy to watch.  I think the comedy is there, especially the “Did you fuck my wife” stuff, it’s the way that they provide this weird childlike wonder into this film, but it’s not necessarily child-friendly.  As I said, there is no blood, it’s an art experiment gone horribly wrong.

This is on HULU currently, and I think at least 90% of my readers will truly enjoy this film if they give it a chance.  It’s just batshit crazy of an idea to hold your attention the whole way through.  When you get to the high five section, you should have a good laugh.  Oh, and if you’re a wrestling fan, Johnny Nitro or Mundo or Impact, whatever you want to call him, plays the minotaur.

Rating: 7.0 – This checks all the marks of a very good, maybe even a great film.  I truly recommend it to anybody with an open mind and ready for something incredibly unique.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
