This is basically an animated anthology of Edgar Allen Poe stories. They are simply narrated. The great thing is the animation is really well done, and the narration is top notch. Christopher Lee did “The Fall Of The House Of Usher” which was really good. They use an old recording of Bela Lugosi for “The Telltale Heart” which Simpsons fans are familiar with. The next story is “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” and the animation reminds me of something that you would see in the Sunday comics. We follow that up with “The Pit and The Pendulum”, narrated by Guillermo Del Toro, and this was probably my favorite one out of the 4, just story wise. Finally, we get the “The Masque of the Red Death” narrated by Roger Corman. I have never read this one, and it’s a pretty bad ass story.
All in all, this is truly a piece of art. It’s really well done, and it is fairly short. I love animation, but this felt more like refined art than animation. All of the narrators were good, but Bela probably stood out the most to me. If you are or aren’t acclimated with these tales, you should find something to really enjoy here, unless you like Twilight. Then you can probably just move right along. The wrap around story was even great. This was definitely a hidden gem in my book. Highly recommended.
Rating – 6.5 for the overall experience, the stories are all great, and it is actually beautiful.
