The Heretics (2017)

This movie keeps popping up on NetFlix trying to get me to watch. NetFlix, you win this time! I know that there is a cult involved and that’s all I need to know.

A girl was tied down and surrounded by masked cultists. Some of them slit their throats. It was all just a dream. Bullshit.

The main girl, Gloria, is attractive and she has some group session. We meet Joan who doesn’t believe in forgiving abusive assholes and is asked to leave the group sessions. Gloria and Joan are preparing some food and a dude named Kent startles Gloria. Okay, I didn’t know there was a guy named Kent involved. They have my attention now. Joan has some scars on her back. Joan is already kind of a pain in the ass. She used to get beat by her dad and seems to like pity parties. I accidentally wrote pity panties.

Gloria leaves Joan and is walking the street. Some guy smuggles her and she drops this necklace that Joan gave her to keep her safe. That necklace is a lie! Gloria wakes up in the van chained up. She gets her phone, calls her mom and the answering machine beep alers the driver who promptly knocks her out again This guy was some symbol on his wrist and appears to have a scarred face. He takes her to the woods and we see a skull on a tree. He carries her to a cabin and chains her to a wall. He’s clearly the film’s MVP so far. I’m saying right now that Ruth, Gloria’s mom, is somehow involved. Gloria has a dream which is right after her previous dream.

The guy, Tom, comes back and wants her to drink some water. He says that after tomorrow, they won’t need her. He is doing this so that she can be saved. Joan calls Ruth and this leads to her hearing the voice message. Joan has organized a group to go knocking on doors with the missing poster. Gloria asks Tom why they came back for her. So this group has had her before. So while everybody else sacrificed themselves, he faked it and then he ran off. Now Tom wants to finish what he started by saving her life. Seems legit. The cops found the necklace and it was right outside her house.

Thomas went outside and comes back to find Gloria out of her chains, and she seemed nice, but it was a hallucination. In reality, she is choking on something and saying that it’s so hot. She asks what’s wrong with her. I’m enjoying this so far.

Joan knocks on a door and a guy is very dismissive. She starts pounding on the door and pulls a knife on him to make sure that he looks at the missing poster. Good for Joan. That is a surprising name for a woman her age.

Gloria is seeing someone walk-in at night with the mask on. You’d be very shocked to find out that she was dreaming. She has a fever it seems. When the sun rises, this will all be over. She asks about his scar. He got punished for not believing.

Ruth calls Joan to come over and chat. The officer is there and he got a call from the guy that she put a knife to. Big surprise there. The officer wants to take Joan in. Joan stabs him in the stomach and then the head. Joan just cut Ruth’s throat. Jesus, that escalated quickly. So what if you find Gloria, now? She’s absolutely fucked unless she is perhaps trying to find Gloria for another purpose. Maybe instead of Ruth, maybe Joan is behind this mess.

Gloria asks Thomas what happened that night, which was 5 years ago when the last locust moon rose. The lord would be received that night. By the next locust moon, the lord would be reborn. Gloria asks what they are waiting for and Thomas says that they thought the lord was inside of Gloria. She’s supposed to be sacrificed. Since he has her, she can’t be of any use to them. He reveals that not all of the cultists are dead. Joan was a member of the group. While she whips herself on the back, I shall pat myself.

Abaddon is the lord that the group serves. I think that was the name of a video game on the NES back in the 80’s. He’s the angel of destruction, guardian of the abyss, the taker of souls. Is this Dark Souls the movie? Nobody reading this gets that reference. If you do, leave me a comment. I don’t know who I am cheering on here. I like Thomas and I like Joan.

Shit, Gloria’s back is fuck, like 2 dark circles. She is gonna have a bad time. Thomas doesn’t know what to do. Gloria got up and freed herself, I guess. He has a knife behind his back and Gloria kisses him. This is a trick, Thomas. Don’t put your guard down. She calls him her angel. Gloria starts taking his clothes off. This is such a bad thing. A little sideboob, but the black things that may end up being wings are distracting. She is riding the D. She turns to Abaddon and then he wakes up with his pants unzipped. Lots of things are not real in this film.

She tells him that she needs to go to the hospital, but he has to protect her. Joan is pissed that everybody in the group is going home for the night. Gloria’s across the street neighbor saw the beige RV with a guy with scars on his face. We have a severe case of Uh Oh. Joan knows it was Thomas. Joan is dragging Kent because she needs his car. Gloria thinks that Joan can help. Thomas tells her to stay away from her. Joan is the one who fucked Thomas up. Joan was the chosen one who was left to finish the ritual. Gloria doesn’t believe him. He just referred to Joan as Gwendoline, and also Thomas’ sister. Joan was their mother’s name. Their dad beat him for not believing. Uh oh, the bell by his house is ringing.

The blots that held Gloria’s chain just came out of the wall. I am left wondering what the best-case scenario for this finale is. I like the idea of Gloria or Joan becoming the lord. Let’s face it, Thomas is gonna get got most likely. Gloria is free and there is a demon in there. At this point, why not take her in the RV and just drive? Why stay in this cabin? This can’t be the safest place anymore. I think Gloria’s water just broke. Her hair is falling out. The wings are more pronounced. She looks like hell.

Joan brought Kent to the RV. I am hoping that Kent gets lucky. I know that he won’t. And Joan just killed Kent. That’s the last time that I ask for Kent to get lucky. Wait…no it’s not. Gloria has slightly more hair than I but and more wings. Thomas is close to shooting Gloria with the shotty because she is in such bad condition. Just shoot her dude. Ohhh we get a flashback to Thomas’ leg and face getting fucked up. Joan just found him and kicked him in the face.

Gloria is now surrounded by a circle of candles and there’s a pentagram drawn on this floor. Joan is so happy, she tells Gloria that she got herself something. It’s the bloody knife, haha. Joan says that Gloria will burn. This is some Cronenberg shit.

There are a bunch of people there now suddenly. Is this real? I am guessing yes. Joan is starting the ceremony. Her back is rough. Thomas is trying to break into the cabin. He does and he is a field with Gloria. That was trippy. Gloria tells him to repent and be saved. He kicks her away and goes to bury an axe in her back but he hits Joan instead. This is not an easy film to write about. Thomas has the gun and Gloria asks him to pull the trigger, but now he is aiming at himself and chained to the wall. Fucking hell. Abaddon is face to face with Gloria. Thomas goes to hit Joan. A bright white light. It’s now 6:33 and Joan as a shovel in her head. He checks on Gloria and she is not responding. He brings her out and the sun is rising. She wakes up. Well, she then takes his soul, kills him, and sprouts her wings. You know, she’s pretty attractive with no hair. Most girls can’t pull that off.

End Film

So this was an hour and 27 minutes and I felt like my time wasn’t wasted. That’s all I ask of films that I have never heard of. Just don’t waste my time. The 3 main stars were all very good in this film. I give a big applause to Nina Kiri (Gloria), Ry Barrett (Thomas), and Jorja Cadence (Joan). Chad Archibald did a great job directing it. I am happy that this is my first 2019 October film that I can recommend to people. The ending is what you’d expect but I feel that any other ending may have been boring or lame. They did the ending that the film built up to.

Final Rating: 6.8
