Sweet Home (2015)

This is the 4th or 5th film this year that started off with writing explaining shit. Also, a record playing, because it’s in vogue to use record players in horror movies for whatever reason. How about an 8 Track?

The story is an incredibly simple one, yet incredibly effective. Alicia wants to surprise her boyfriend on his birthday by bringing him to this most empty apartment building. They would have a nice romantic time together. Unfortunately for them, some gentlemen had some other obligations that included eliminating anybody in the building. So it’s basically a lengthy cat and mouse type of film. If that doesn’t interest you, I get it, but I loved watching it play out.

It amazes me how so many horror filmmakers insist on over-complicating things. This is a shining example of how to focus on one thing, and do it well. It will be compared to something like ILS, The Strangers, or other home invasion styled films, and that’s fine, but this is in a strange apartment building, so that’s the unique aspect to an easy story. Bravo.

I really love the big hoss, El Liquidator as he is credited. He knew his shit and he was very competent given that he was working 2 against 1. Also, it wasn’t lost on me that they used green and red lights, similar to Star Wars, and I feel that was a nod, or at least hope it was.

Rating – 5.7 I really enjoyed it, would watch again to show someone or recommend, and would buy it if the price was right.
