Cult of Chucky (2017)

I thoroughly enjoyed Curse of Chucky. I am cautiously optimistic about this final chapter in the franchise before the reboot. Cult of Chucky has relatively good reviews. It has a solid cast with a nice variety of names from the past. Andy, Nica, Alice, Tiffany/Jennifer, and of course, Chucky, are all back in this one.

I’ve avoided reading any spoilers about this one. With a name like Cult of Chucky, I am left wondering. Will there be copycat murders by midgets? Will people start dressing like Good Guys? Will there simply be a lot of dolls? With Nica and Alice both in this, I have to imagine that Nica and Andy will somehow join forces at some point and Chucky will still be after Alice. Those are my guesses. I just ate some Cheetos Mac ‘N Cheese and it was surprisingly delicious. It did get a little clumpy with the seasoning no matter how much I stirred it. I blame the butter. Anyway, it’s time to start Cult of Chucky.

Start Film

Andy is having dinner with a ginger named Rachel. She has issues with guns. Typical ginger. She is attractive though. This dinner is a good way to catch people up to speed. Chucky has killed 37 people, apparently. Rachel just bails on Andy. I’m not surprised. I do like Andy’s cabin. I also like that Andy is just a normal-looking dude, with a huge arsenal. There’s my name on a shirt. I don’t even own a shirt with my name on it. Hahaha, he has Chucky’s head locked in a safe and has him gagged. Chucky is missing a good chunk of his skull where his left eye should be. Jesus, Andy has a lot of weapons. Chucky pisses off Andy, so he gets the torch out and burns his wounded skull. Nice way to start it.

Okay, these intro credits are really solid and I’m confident that this could be a good film.

We are with Nica in the hospital as she is getting shock treatment. Are we still using shock treatment? I just paused the film, and yes we most certainly are, and apparently, it is a good short-term treatment for those with severe depression who don’t respond well to drug therapy. Good to know. In this instance, it may not be, for the film’s purposes.

They have apparently convinced Nica that she actually committed the murders, or is she just faking it. She is getting transferred to Harrogate, which is only medium security. Oh, they say that she has schizophrenia. She worries about what Alice will think of her. At Harrogate, we meet Carlos who is setting up her room. There are no cameras here. Carlos’ husband has MS. He kinda leaves her with some gum. That’s awesome.

This place isn’t bad, it isn’t great either. She enters a common area and waves to Carlos who ignores her. Some other lady comes up to her and asks her if she can see her. The lady claims that she died in this room. Her name is Angela, and some dude says that everybody can see her. They found her 30 years ago and she was homeless. This guy is named Michael. Hello Nurse Ashley. Michael asks her if she still has a thing for redheads, haha. She gives him a stick of Juicy Fruit and then they fuck And she can feel that. I’m learning so much today.

At group therapy, Claire asks Nica why she killed her family. Claire burned her house down. There’s also Madeleine. I may abbreviate her name to Mad or Madel. She smothered her infant son to death. Nica says that she hopes Alice is okay and Angela says that Alice isn’t okay. Chucky called her on the phone and told Angela that Chucky is coming for Nica. I should mention that the doctor’s name is Dr. Foley. Foley brings out a Good Guy doll named Chucky that he bought at Hot Topic. The dolls had 50 possible names. Mad thinks that Chucky is her baby.

What the fuck are they eating? Madeleine is treating the doll like her baby. Claire is just a bitch to everybody. Michael now introduces himself as Mark. Michael is in the pool getting ready for the 2020 Olympics. This guy is fun. Per Madeleine, his real name is Malcolm and they sometimes call him Multiple Malcolm.

Nice has a visitor. It is Tiffany!! She is Alice’s guardian. The fuck? How? Nica tells her that she looks just like Jennifer Tilly. Hahaha. Tiffany tells her that Alice is dead. Foley didn’t know about this. Tiffany blames the death on a broken heart. Alice wanted Nica to have something, a Chucky doll. Nica is so thin. I’m not sure that I believe that Tiffany became the guardian of Alice. It doesn’t make much sense. Foley and Mad cross paths both carrying a Chucky doll. Foley leaves his Chucky in his office. Then Chucky’s eyes blinked. Alright.

At night, Carlos is doing work. It is snowing out. Chucky finds the sharps drawer and grabs a scalpel and Carlos doesn’t hear him because he is listening to music. Chucky sees Angela. Angela tries the same thing with Chucky about him being able to see her. He tells Angela that she’s gonna be next.

Chucky is in Nica’s room. One of the spokes on her wheelchair is broken. He sees a lot of blood on the floor. Nica has slit her wrist. Chucky is intrigued. In the morning Carlos wakes her up. In the pool of blood, it says “NOT SO FAST” and her arm is stitched up. Haha.

There is an alarm sounding and it’s a Code Blue. Someone got got. I’m guessing Angela. Sure was, with the broken spoke from the wheelchair. In the pool of blood is says “CHUCKY DID IT”.

Foley is visited by Andy who shows him the Chucky head. This is a video from the past. He shows him Chucky’s head and how it responds to pain. He is trying to prove Nica’s innocence. Chucky asks Andy if he really is potentially crazy.

Claire is blaming Nica for Angela’s death. Malcolm blames Chucky. Madeleine comes in with her Chucky and the 2 Chucky’s talk to each other. Nica then realizes that Tiffany was Charles’ girlfriend. Foley says that Chucky is just a doll. She tells Foley to proves that he’s just a doll. So Foley takes his lighter out and burns Chucky’s fingers. He is melting his hands. Haha. Nica wants her to test Madeleine’s doll and Mad storms out. Malcolm believes Nica. Madeleine is going to take her baby out for a walk. Hahaha, now Malcolm is Mark Zuckerberg. Someone went into Foley’s office and stole the Chucky doll. Claire just got bit by the Chucky doll.

Nica watches Maddy out through the window. She is standing by a grave. Chucky flips Chucky off. Maddy throws Chucky into an open grave. Malcolm then shows up. Maddy throws Malcolm into the grave. They are strapping Clair down to the bed. Claire tries to warn them, but they sedate her. She is conscious but can’t move. Foley considers this mass hysteria. Nurse Ashley comes in and says that she needs some help with Malcolm. Nica watches Malcolm hand her Chucky. Carlos and Ashley get Malcolm out and Malcolm gives an icy stare to Nica.

Claire is laying there. Chucky grabs an oxygen tank, I think. He bashes it into the floor and it shoots through the ceiling window. The glass falls and decapitates Claire. Andy reads up on this and Chucky says “You thought I was the only one?” Nica thinks that both dolls are alive and we see Chucky perform the ritual on the other doll. Fascinating. Foley wants to hypnotize Nica. He threatens to send her back to Lochmoor. That is the maximum-security place.

He injects her with something and now starts hypnosis. He suggests that there are actually cameras there, and asks her if she can picture herself killing Angela and Claire. He is convincing her that she murdered them. She tells him that Chucky is right behind him. Then he gives her a big kiss and he misses their sessions. Chucky breaks a glass over Foley’s head and notes how sick Foley is. Chucky tells her that she wants to do this and hands her some shard of glass and tells her to join the club.

Now Nica is out in the hallway crawling on her stomach. She sees Alica. Alica says that “We’ve been waiting for you.” The silhouette of Chucky gets larger. A large Chucky stands behind her. Then she wakes up. She is in an exam room being monitored and the snow is falling on her. She sees images in her head and then wakes up. Maddy, Malcolm, and Nica are waiting for Foley. Malcolm’s name today is Charles and he says that he thinks that they’ve met. Nica asks to hold Chucky. There’s Dr. Foley. He asks her if she remembers. He says that she assaulted him. Maddy is going to breastfeed Chucky.

Andy is driving and Tiffany/Jennifer gives him a call. Andy is coming for her. She mentions how there are actually 3 of “us” and says that Chucky mentioned “disembowel” to her.

Maddy finishes breastfeeding. Then she lays Chucky down. Her breast is bleeding. Nica is trying to get her attention. She says something about a boy’s best friend is his mother. Wasn’t that from Psycho? She is picking up a pillow. She goes to smother Chucky and his arm stops moving. Foley sees this and asks her what she’s done. He brings up her real baby, Joshua. Maddy explains how her baby wouldn’t stop crying. Nica claims the doll is alive and Malcolm finds all of this funny. Foley suggests that they bury the past since the doll represents all of their issues. So they bury the doll. Nica isn’t with them outside.

The delivery van just left. Andy arrives and says that he needs to see Foley or Nica. The security guard tells him to leave, so Andy punches him. Andy gets committed. Chucky injects something into Nica as she sees the buried Chucky raise his arm out of the grave. And Foley just had a package delivered of another Chucky. This one has short cut hair.

Madeleine is sad in her room. She has Chucky’s shoe. Ashley insists on no shoelaces. Ashley has 2 kids and still looks that good. Damn. Maddy is on a suicide watch. The door closes and there’s Chucky. She tells him to come to mommy one last time. She asks if it will hurt and he says that he will do his best. He plays with her mouth. She is gagging. He just jammed his arm down her throat and pulls out her tongue or something. She’s dead. Ashley finds Maddy with Chucky’s arm in Maddy’s mouth.

Ashley can’t do this anymore, so she leaves. Foley tells Carlos to get rid of the doll. Foley goes to his office and Nica is in there. He asks how she got in there and she says that is was Chucky. She appears to have a straight jacket on. He tells her that Maddy killed herself. He says that all of this is going to make a hell of a book. He says that she is going to have to go back to Lochmoor, which is a shame. He wanted to give her so much more personal attention. He has red shoes for her She tells him that he is going to die and she will tell everybody about her. He says that nobody will listen to her. Chucky breaks another bottle on Foley’s head, and he seems to like Foley. He encourages her to kill him. The armless Chucky arrives and the 2 Chucky’s talk and one of them is upset that Hannibal got canceled. They notice the third doll and wake him up.

Chucky explains that he found a new spell online to put himself into anything or anybody. He apparently did so with Alice and talks about how people trust cute little girls. But little girls can get hurt when their victims fight back. Carlos enters toe room and assaulted by all 3. That is unfortunate. I liked him. I wonder if they wanted Danny Trejo for the role. They welcome new Chucky to the Cult.

The Chucky’s argue over who gets to kill Andy. One says that he lost an arm but he got to suck boob. On the other hand, his hand melted. But the third has the bad hair. This is pretty funny. The security guard goes back outside to see a red car just parked there. Nobody is in there aside from the Tiffany doll. Tilly just slit his throat. She’s so proud of herself.

Chucky admits that he was never going to kill Nica. He wanted to do the ritual with her. Now she can stand. Oh my. She takes off the straight jacket. Foley wakes up and sees her standing. She squeezes her tits and talks about the perks of being supernaturally possessed. Then she says that this is for Nica and stomps in his head. She finds Malcolm and he claims to have killed Ashley. Ashley is dead. Malcolm claims to be Charles. Nica calls out Malcolm for his lies. Malcolm just wants to be someone who matters. Malcolm just got a drill through the back of his head. Hahaha, Fiona is good at doing the Chucky laugh.

Short-haired Chucky visits Andy and throws a knife in his legs. Andy hid a gun in that doll and rips it out of his stomach. He tells him that this is the end. Hahaha, Andy is the one who sent that doll and now that doll is dead. Andy turns around to see Nica. Andy is out of ammo. Nica leaves Andy in his room. Armless Chucky goes back to sitting still as Nica leaves. She finds Tilly. Alright, they kiss. Nice.

Tilly feels bad about Alice. The Tiffany doll is also alive. They all laugh about poor Alice. Tilly drives away.

End Film

And there’s another post-credit scene. Hey, it’s Kyle and she is at Andy’s cabin and she is going to have fun with the Chucky head. Nice!

End Film for reals.

Wow, once again, I’m quite impressed. This all worked for me. I’m sad that they rebooted the franchise because they had made so much progress. But it’s best to end it before it gets bad. 5 of the 7 films have been quite good.

I think I preferred Curse more than Cult of Chucky, but not by much. This had a little more humor and a little less horror. This was more Bride of Chucky. I liked how they tied so many things together. It all mostly worked for me. I think Alice could have had more time on screen, but that is such a minor gripe. I liked having multiple Chucky’s and the concept made some sense, all things considered. What I like most of all is that the “bad guys” won. Andy is still locked up in the cell. Everybody got killed. Yes, Kyle gets to torture the head but we will probably go beyond that. I’d assume that had they made one more, it would involve Kyle trying to save Andy. But that story would have been too similar to this one.

I keep wanting to compare Cult of Chucky with Curse of Chucky. You can break this franchise into sections. Parts 1 and 2 are similar, but 1 is better. Then part 3 happened and everybody would like to forget that. Then Bride and Seed had similar vibes. Then Curse and Cult had similar vibes. Curse was more horror overall, but this was more fun. Fun is good with me, especially reaching part 7. Fiona Dourif is awesome and I want to see more of her. I hope that she has a lot of success.

Rating: 6.8 – I’m truly splitting hairs here. I preferred Curse because of its atmosphere. But this was damn near as good. Claire’s death was a little cheesy. Everything else worked for me.
