Curse of Chucky (2013)

I have never seen Curse of Chucky. It was direct to video, which isn’t surprising given the reaction to Seed of Chucky. This does have Fiona Dourif, who is Brad’s daughter. I liked her performance in the first season of The Purge. She is also in the upcoming remake of The Stand. So I have lowered expectations heading into Curse of Chucky. I would like to be pleasantly amused. I will be watching the Unrated version of Curse of Chucky. I own both on digital. How fucking stupid is it that you have to buy two separate copies of the same film to get the unrated? Fucking thieving bastards!

Anyway, this sounds like it may go back more toward the horror aspect of the franchise. Sometimes that does wonders for a franchise. I have my fingers crossed. Let’s start Curse of Chucky and have a good time.

Start Film

Fiona’s character’s name is Nica and she is in a wheelchair. Nica gets a package delivered. The first thing is notice is that this looks like it was filmed in the late 2000’s decade or early 2010’s. You seriously can see some of these films and give yourself a 5 year range and typically guess the year that they came out. I guess you may have guessed early 2000’s like the TCM remake, but this looks more like House of Wax remake. Now I am just rambling.

The delivery guy was hitting on Nica, but her mom, Sarah, was there. Sarah was the guy was just being nice. I don’t trust this bitch 3 and a half minutes in. She doesn’t want to see Nica get hurt. This package is huge. Nope, not going to comment. Oh, it doesn’t say who the package is from. Hey, it’s a nice looking Good Guy doll, no stitches. Very fresh looking. The question is who sent Chucky to her and why? If those questions aren’t answered, I won’t be giving a positive review.

Sarah throws Chucky away. At night, Sarah is screaming. Oh, they have an elevator in their house. Why not just have Nica sleep on the first floor? That would seem more efficient than installing an elevator. Nice finds a pool of blood and her mom’s body. That makes sense. And there’s Chucky sitting in a rocking chair. Oh no, this is gonna be horror cliche ridden I ear with how the final act goes. I hope that I am wrong. Much better camerawork at the very least. The best since the original.

We meet Barbie and Father Frank. Sarah was apparently a little crazy. Barbie is Nica’s sister. Barbie wants to pray for their mom. Nice doesn’t appear to be pro-church. Ian must be Barbie’s husband, Jill is the nanny to their daughter, Alice. Nica wanted to give Alice the Chucky doll. Alice is insistent on locking the bathroom door. Kinda strange. Oh, is that a shower wheelchair? That would make some sense. Alice finds Chucky in the bathroom.

Barbie wants to sell the house and send Nica to a different home. Barbie and Ian are “struggling” and fear having to send Alice to public school. Oh, the horror. Barbie isn’t happy with Jill, apparently. Nica and Alice make dinner and Chucky pours rat poison in one of the dishes. Nica made chili, and it looks good. Mine looks better. Also, is that mozzarella cheese in the chili? Maybe a white cheddar or a sharp. Ian and Jil are very chummy. Vegetarian chili….that explains it. Barbie is jealous. Alice says it tastes weird and Barbie insists that she eats it. Once again, the women are all decent looking in the past 2 films. I still think either Ian or Father got the poison, and Alice was a distraction.

Father had a head-on collision. Father got got. What a crash. All the steel pinched him together, like in Signs, but far more gruesome and less dramatic. At the house, they watch home movies. Nica and Barbie’s father drowned shortly before Nica was born. Who is that in the video, with the nice long hair? Hi Charles. Alice says that Chucky is missing so Jill will help look. Alice claims that Chucky is hiding. Jill ends up in the bathroom and the curtain is moving. Hello, Jill’s fine ass in those pants. Barbie offers to help Jill and then they makeout. Okay, I didn’t see that coming, but I want to see them cumming. Nica finds Chucky sitting next to Ian. Nica says that she will bring Chucky up to Alice, but the elevator gets stuck and the power appears to have gone out.

Barbie and Jill are making out. Barbie does scream out “Coming”. I guess I got my wish. Nica hears a knife unsheathing. The power returns and Chucky maniacally laughs. It was solid. Nica has a bad heart and Barbie is trying to make Nica consider the assisted living. Nice is bleeding at the knee. She wouldn’t have felt it. This film has a whole new vibe to it, very traditional horror but with a horror icon inserted into the premise. Hahaha, Chucky told ALice all kinds of awful things. He’s fantastic.

I am wearing a tank top and I am listening to the film via wired headphones. The cord keeps tickling my chest. You needed to know that. How long until Alice wanting to lock the door in the bathroom comes to play? I’m going to say at the one hour and 17 minute mark.

Alice is scared by the storm. Chucky tells her that she fucking should be. Haha. Aww, my tater tots are losing their crunch. Jill is going to bed and taking her shirt off. She is probably the most attractive female yet, although I prefer Jennifer Tilly. Nica is looking up Chucky and there’s a picture of Andy from the paper. Wow, Jill. I’m happy that she is in this. Her and Barbie are going to get on cam together. Chucky is behind Jill though. Now he is by her legs. Damnit Chucky! He kicked a bucket collecting rain water and this is electrocuting my girl, Jill. Very uncool. Nica is seeing pictures of Charles. As Jill falls, we get one final good ass shot. I accept that. I don’t like Chucky’s new look, but I am trying to accept it.

Ohhhh, I an knows that Barb has a thing for Jill. Good for you Ian. Barb gets very defensive. Hahaha, Ian stuck a nanny cam in the doll. He plans on taking Alice because Barb is a cheating bitch. Good for Ian, but I can’t help but imagine what things Jill and Barb liked to do. Ah well.

Barb is gonna check on Alice. Chucky is sitting at the foot the stair. Nica, what are you wearing? Barb has Chucky and sees Nica. Nica wants her to put down Chucky because he thinks it is evil, but Barb thinks it is about the nanny cam. Barb is such a self centered bitch. I quite like her. Nobody in the house will respond because Jill is dead, Ian has ear plugs in, Barb is pissed, Alice is sleeping or hiding, and there is no phone signal. How many more years are we going to do the “no signal” thing in horror?

Barb finds the knife that Chucky had. She sits the knife down next to him Awww, Barb, bad idea. Nica is slowly crawling up the stairs. There’s a mouse upstairs. Barb is startled by that and then Chucky being behind her. Barb slowly peels away the rubber from Chucky’s face. There are some of the sticthes. Now I am getting pumped. Then he goes to bite her. He peels away more of his face. He just stabbed Barb in the eye. Damn, that was brutal. Nica hears the scream and heads to the third floor stairs, and then Barb’s eye comes rolling down the stairs. Barb is up and walking but then falls next to Nica. Chucky reveals himself to Nica.

How the hell does Iam hear nothing? Fiona Dourif is a really good actress. I want to point that out. Nica gets into a wheelchair and nobody knows where Alice is, but she just found Jill. Nica wakes up Ian and he is trying to find Alice. Ian brings Nica downstairs. Poor Ian, you know that he’s next. The music is quite good here. He gets Nica into the garage. She warns him to avoid Chucky. I still have 10 minutes to go on my bathroom prediction.

Chucky is now in the garage and starts up the car. He has locked the door and letting the garage fill up with exhaust fumes. She finds an ax. She breaks into the car but Chucky grabs the key and swallows it. Ian thinks that Nica did it. Nica’s heart problem is happening. He refuses to give her the needle. Okay, I didn’t expect that.

Ian has taped Nica to her chair. Ian is going to prove Nica wrong with the nanny cam. He bought the camera at Radio Shack. They were still around then? He watches the footage of Barb and Jill making out then of Chucky approaching him. He sees where Alice is hiding. Then he switches to live feed mode and Chucky enters the room and pushes the chair into Ian. If the power is out, that means no wifi. How is he able to get live video feed without wifi? I don’t fully understand how these cameras work. Maybe a different kind of transmitter, I suppose. Chucky takes the ax and cuts off most of Ian’s lower jaw.

Chucky charges and buries the ax in her leg. She attacks him. Then she knocks his head off. Technically, shouldn;t that be enough since he is partially alive? I never understood that. But she is bleeding badly. Chucky’s body rose like the Undertaker. He puts his head back on. He pushes her and the wheelchair off of the second floor balcony. She is bleeding badly. She’s awake though. She refers to him as Charles Lee Ray. She asks why he chose them.

Chucky asks if her mom ever mentioned him. He was an old friend of the family. We go to a flashback when the family video was recorded. He mentions how young Barb has her mother’s eyes. Then we are at the father’s funeral. Charles killed the father Charles has Sarah tied to a bed and gagged and surrounded by flowers (the same flowers that Sarah was painting in the very beginning). He says that he’s going to pick up Barbie from daycare. I really like the colors here. Sarah offers to have him all to herself. Sarah wants to keep her daughters away from him and he doesn’t want to be hurt. The police show up. Charles truly thought that they were a thing. He has his classic knife that I love. He holds the knife to her belly and is the reason why Nica was a paraplegic. We see the night that Mike shoots and kills him. And so he tracked down Sarah. He mentions families like the Barclay’s, Kincaid’s, and Tilly’s. Did he kill the Tilly’s? He compared Nica to Andy and talks about killing his childhood. She mocks him for never killing Andy and how he has completion anxiety. She asks if he is waiting for a sign from God because he is so slow at killing.

The electricity comes back on. She gets in the elevator and then the power goes back out. He slices the hell out of her hands, but she eventually rips the knife away in the most painful way possible. Then they have a fight. She cuts her and bites her. She stabs him. He’s still alive. The police arrive and she screams for help. Just one officer. He sees Barb missing an eye and he see s a bloody Jill with the bloody knife. She doesn’t say anything though.

Chucky sits in the chair smiling. We hear that Nica is sentenced to a facility for the criminally insane. At the trial, we see Exhibits A, b, C, etc which include the rat poison, the ax, the knife, and of course, Chucky. She talks shit to Chucky as she is wheeled away.

We see an officer with an evidence bag. You remember Officer Bailey from the beginning of Bride of Chucky, it’s the same idea. There’s Tiffany! Yay!!! She slits the officer’s throat and says that they never learn. Then we see Tiffany mailing out the package. She is Tiffany as Jennifer Tilly, right?

Alice comes home to her grandmother’s place. She sees an open box on the table. She turns around and there is Chucky, and she is happy to see him. She asks where her grandma is and he tells her that she’s down in the basement. Now it is time to play everybody’s favorite game, Hide The Soul. She asks why she always has to be it, and he says because she is someone that nobody would ever expect. he starts the ritual. The camera trails off to the right showing more of the kitchen and then they did a quick jump scare at the end with presumably the grandma gasping for air suddenly.

End Film

Nope, there is a post-credit scene. A man receives a package. He gets a phone call from his mom about his birthday. While he is on the phone, Chucky is cutting himself out of the box. We then see a Kent Military School diploma and then a picture of Kyle, and then finally the picture of Andy with his mom, Karen. Chucky must have taken what Nica said to heart. He turns around and Andy has a gone pointed at Chucky’s head and fires. That’s what I would consider part of the Curse of Chucky.

End Film Officially

Now that is a movie that I really enjoyed. I loved the deeper story. I loved the last 15 minutes or so. The explanations all made a reasonable amount of sense. Sarah was the reason that Charles was on the run and then got killed by Mike. Naturally, he’d want revenge. I loved seeing Tiffany and Andy back at the end. Everything made a lot of sense. They did a great job with the storytelling. Only the unrated version has the awesome Andy scene. This is why you always get the unrated versions. It’s already rated R, so who cares about a little more blood?

Goodness, I’m impressed and fear staying up to watch the final one. I want to end my night on a positive note. Everything about this was solid. I can’t find flaws in it. This was a straight-up horror film, not much on the comedy, but this worked incredibly well. Was this better than the original or Bride? That is tough. It is right there with both of them. I don’t feel bad for grouping them so close together.

Rating: 7.1 – Probably better in a lot of ways to Bride, but Bride had some elements that this one didn’t have, and for good reason. This film knew what it wanted to be and stuck to it. I applaud this. I highly recommend it if you have seen the first 4 films, at the very least.
