Firestarter (1984)

Now we are back in business! This movie still holds up really well. It holds up pretty damn well with the book in my opinion, as well as a movie can hold up. This is probably Drew Barrymore’s biggest acting gig up to the point. Yeah, she had done Altered States and E.T. which was huge back in the day, but she was the star here in a cast about as well constructed as a horror film is gonna get. Consider Keith David was awesome back in the day, a younger Heather Locklear, George C Scott as one of the main antagonists, Martin Sheen as a head honcho, and rounding it out with Art Carney (Honeymooners) and Louise Fletcher (One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest) as the older couple that help out a strange man and his daughter.

I can’t imagine that you are reading this if you haven’t seen it, but sometimes there’s some teen or person in their 20’s who simply haven’t gotten around to it, so this is for you. I have started drinking. This blog may get better. So here’s the basic premise. 2 college kids agree to some experiments conducted at the college for some extra money. They did not get the placebos. They end up with powers. The dad can make people think things differently, but it fucks with his head and causes his nose to bleed. The mom, I dunno. They have a kid, Drew Barrymore. She’s a firestarter….that’s the name of the movie!!! So anyway, the government wants to intervene, the mom gets got, the father and daughter go to Albany airport, and they continue to get hunted down. Drew goes ape shit, takes out quite a few mother fuckers in an awesome scene at the old couple’s place, then they get captured, and much much more. Seriously, stop reading and go watch if you haven’t seen it. The book is plenty short and worth a read through too. There’s also a sequel, avoid at all costs. Stephen King stories never have good sequels, except for like Dark Tower, but that’s a whole other beast.

As for the rating….it’s good but not great. As far as execution goes, they did fine. Sometimes a story can only be so epic. I’m giving this movie a 7, and I am feeling bad about it only being a 7 but I cant realistically give it much more. Sorry.
