Friend Request (2016)

I went in this expecting an absolutely terrible film for me to rip apart.  I really like Alycia Debnam-Carey though and wanted to give her a chance.  I hate social media, and you know that you’re dealing with dumbass college kids whose lives revolve around it.  This wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either.  Let’s discuss the plot quickly.

Laura (Alycia) is one of those nice, outgoing girls who is loved, has like 900 FB friends, and is studying to be a psychologist, I think.  She ends up friending Ma Rina, or Marina.  There’s a reason for why that is typed, but I won’t say.  Marina is a social outcast who has zero friends until Laura.  Marina also pulls her hair out a lot.  Anyway, she becomes obsessed with Laura, constantly messaging her, tagging her, trying to call her, to a highly uncomfortable level.  Laura is torn between telling that bitch to be cool and trying to be sensitive to Marina’s situation.  By the way, South Park already told this story quite a few years ago.  Eventually, Laura can’t handle Marina’s neediness and unfriend’s her and so Marina kills herself and starts haunting them from the dead in interesting ways.

First of all, nobody has 900 friends.  I really hate this idea.  800 of those people at the very least are acquaintances.  I don’t like being friends with someone on social media with that many “friends” because they feel fake.

Yes, I have seen this story before, but without the horror twist.  I loved Marina’s Facebook page.  It was artistically beautiful.  Some of the imagery was just wonderful.  If nothing else, fast forward to get to those scenes.  They did a great job with it.  I am giving this film a full 2.5 points just for that.

I hate when they try telling us that this girl is ugly.  Look up Liesl Ahlers.  She is beautiful.  Why can’t we give these roles to girls who aren’t beautiful to actually give them an opportunity that they wouldn’t normally get?  Seriously, enough with the nerdy or outcast girls being hot in real life.  We aren’t giving talented actresses opportunities in roles that they would be perfect for.

This delves into what you would expect as you go further, they learn more about Marina and Laura keeps losing Facebook friends.  The end shot is predictable, but also really well done.  I am shocked to say this, but this was surprisingly good.  There are a lot of things to enjoy here.  It’s not for everybody, but if you can get behind the social media stupidity, and the stupidity of the officers, you have a solid film.  It only has a 5.3 on IMDB and I get it, but I think people overlooked some of the truly creep aspects of this one.

Rating: 6.2 – I enjoyed this.  I think I could definitely rewatch this.  I feel that you really have to give this film 30 minutes to get the full vibe.  If you still aren’t into it, it may not get any better.  But you have to give it a real chance to win you over because I was very skeptical of this one.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
