The Gate (1987)

I don’t know if I have ever seen this, but it’s short and that is a plus right now. I need to wrap up so many loose ends by midnight. So here we go with The Gate, starring Stephen Dorff. The synopsis sounds silly as fuck but got a 5.9 on IMDB, which is solid for horror.

We have 2 boys, Glenn and Terry, and they found a geode. Well, Glenn dug up a hole and his parents are pissed. The parents are gonna go away for 3 days, leaving Glenn’s older sister Alexandra in charge. OK, there you have it.

Despite Al’s parents telling her not to, she naturally has a big party, and some guy is even skateboarding around the house. Of course, that is happening. Ohhhhh, the outfits!!! The boys finally break open this rock and are super pumped. They read some ancient wording, no idea how that even got there, but you know that caused some bad shit outside.  Well, the dog died after the party.

Less than an hour to go, and this has been a lousy movie so far. At the party, they levitated Glenn by the way, apparently, this is important. About 45 minutes…..and still not much.  The boys research what they did with the words they said. The dead dog ends up in a bed and some arms are trying to grab at the boys and Al and her friends. They run outside, bee Glenn’s folks, but the dad starts strangling him, like Homer Simpson. This is just weird. The dad’s face like imploded and melted.

Now there are a bunch of midget monsters about one and a half feet tall, a bunch of them, trying to get in. The kids are exploring the hole and he ends up falling down, or maybe sucked in. The monsters attack him.  Terry gets out. The rest of the guests leave the house, leaving Glenn, Terry, and Al. These zombie-like bodies come through the wall, but then they break down into these tiny creatures.

Honestly, this movie bored the piss outta me. I wanted to love it. Maybe I am just exhausted from doing this all day, but it could not hold my interest to save my life. I don’t know if it’s fair to give it a 3.0 which is how I feel, or an incomplete, implying I will be revisiting it down the road. Well, I am gonna do both as I feel there may be something here, but today, I am just not getting it. Sorry, this was a dud for me today.

Final Rating: 3.0
