The Lost Boys (1987)

On the plus side, we have 4 really good movies in a row, so these reviews should get better. So far, Vampire movies have not done well with me, but don’t call it a comeback, we have 3 of what I consider the 4 greatest vampire movies I personally have seen. I do have a nice list of suggestions from some lovely Facebook folks which I am gonna explore later on this month or next. Fortunately, I watch horror all year round. I just don’t have lofty goals in other months.

Back to The Lost Boys. If you grew up in the 80’s, you probably have seen this movie. You probably can hear a few chords of Cry Little Sister and associate it to this movie. When I think 80’s Keiffer Sutherland, I think Lost Boys more so than Stand By Me. Same with the Corey’s. Oh and Jason Patric who has had a mixed bag of a career with Narc, Speed 2, and Sleepers. It should be noted that he is technically the lead character in this movie along with Corey Haim, but I feel this movie is always going to be first and foremost associated with Keiffer because his role was bad ass. The story is pretty damn good. A family of 3, the mom, Jason Patric (Micheal), and Corey Haim (Sam) move to California to live with her father. We get a sweet beginning while listening to People Are Strange. We see that Keiffer is the leader of a group of teenage or young adult punk bastards always up to no good. Sam likes comics so he was at this comic book store and meets up with Corey Feldman and this other kid, and they are the Frog brothers, and they make him take a vampire survival comic or something of that nature. Micheal is at this concert where he sees a chick that he keeps eyeball fucking and she flirts back. This concert is fucking amazing. I am going to provide a link as it is this jacked up shirtless Fabio dude who sings and plays the sax. It is borderline magical. Go to Youtube and search Lost Boys concert, it’s the first result.

Micheal keeps on trying to get with this chick, so he finds out she hangs out with Keiffer’s group, and Keiffer decided Micheal should hang out with them, go through one of the most unique nights of his life. Long story short, Micheal ends up being a vampire with the group, and hangs out with these guys and the chick (Star). Meanwhile, the mom is looking for a job and meets this charming guy who she eventually invites over for dinner. The Sam and the Frog brothers become convinced he is the head vampire so they test him out at dinner, but it’s not working as they expected. I will leave the rest alone as I don’t want to give away the ending. The best stuff is truly Micheal interacting with Keiffer’s crew. For iconic 80’s horror, I would say this is on most everybody’s top 10 if not top 5 list. It’s surprisingly not as dated as I thought it would be, aside from the hair and sax man. I really recommend it and I think this movie made me want to see more vampire flicks. I have no problems giving this movie an 8.
