The Void (2016)

Let’s talk about a movie that I was really hyped for, and felt destined to love.  Spoiler alert, I didn’t love it.

I saw this heavily advertised for me on NetFlix.  I read some reviews.  When people mention The Thing or Hellraiser, you have my attention.  This felt like an open love letter to those films and those times.  Stylistically, it is actually really good.  The monsters look awesome.  The people in the robes were actually frightening.  The atmosphere was very much like The Thing in that you knew something crazy was going to happen every 3 minutes.  The pacing was fast.  There is a lot to really like here.  But do you all remember Avatar?  Remember how pretty it was and people couldn’t get their lips off of James Cameron’s ass?  Do you also remember how bad the story was and how boring it was?  Or maybe you have played a beautiful video game and sit there wowed by the introduction and then you play it, and the controls are shit and make it unplayable.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Void.

I don’t even know how to describe the damn story.  We start off with Vincent and Simon burning some girl to death while James flees and gets away.  Deputy Daniel comes across James and brings him to the closest hospital, despite them having a recent fire and not having a ton of staff.  It really is a skeleton crew at this point.  We have Allison, who is Daniel’s ex-wife who also had a miscarriage with him.  Then there is Dr. Richard Powell, Kim who is an intern, Beverley, who is a nurse, Ben and his pregnant granddaughter Maggie, and Cliff, who is a patient.

Shit continuously goes worse and worse.  and the first half has you really amped up.  You think it may zig and then it zags and it is really exciting.  You keep waiting for that big reveal that explains everything clearly before the finale.  Consider the pacing of The Thing and how it kept up and then really explained what we’re dealing with and then just keeps on going.  This becomes a confusing mess after a while.  Yeah, I get it, well for the most part, but not 100%.  The ending was beyond unsatisfying.  They just didn’t know how to really finish this one off.  It’s like a nice 9-minute blowjob and just as you’re ready to unleash your white wrath, bitch bites you really hard and tells you that she’s tired and going to bed.  You’re too sore to finish and you hate life and you wish you could revisit the good times.

That’s all this film was in the end.  It never climaxed properly so you walk away frustrated, pissed off, and just wishing it had finished good.  I would like to include Southbound and Baskin in this review in some capacity because it reminded me of those two films as well.  I should also say, I thought the acting was fine.  I have no gripes with any actors, and I think they did the best they could with the material.

Rating: 4.9 – While this is my second time viewing, this was for review purposes, so it doesn’t count, and I was really hoping to find something to love here.  I didn’t.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
