Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

I did a terrible blog about this film in 2013.  Let’s just say that I was very new at blogging.  I may not be good now, but I am experienced.  Let’s break down this wonderful film.

The idea is that they live in a world where Freddy, Jason, and Michael exist.  You need to comprehend that first.  Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) plays a role in this film, and Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees sometimes) is there briefly living inside of Freddy’s house.  There are a ton of nods to horror fanatics.  Leslie Vernon wants to become the next great killer.  3 college kids, Taylor, Doug, and Todd are going to do a documentary on him and follow his process.  Some people will find this utterly silly, and if so, that’s a shame.

Leslie has been working and learning under the tutelage of Eugene (Scott Wilson) and his wife Jamie (Bridgett Newton).  They are kind of like parental figures to him now, and Eugene is definitely his mentor and a former killer himself.  He alludes to the fact that Jamie was his “last girl” and that’s how they fell in love.  Leslie shows the crew this hot chick named Kelly.  Kelly works at a diner, fits all of the criteria for the last girl as Leslie lays out.  He then explains how he has to plant seeds in her mind, which he does at the library.  The librarian is played by the great Zelda Rubinstein.  While there, Doc Halloran shows up, who is played by Robert Englund.  In case Doc Halloran sounds familiar, it should.  In The Shining, Dick Halloran would communicate with Danny and sometimes call him Doc.  I assume Jamie is named after Jamie Lee Curtis.  As I said, this is like a huge homage to the horror genre.

Leslie then gives the crew a walkthrough, very specifically, of how this party will go down in which he will kill everyone except for Kelly.  He gets super analytical about it, down to the weapons, the makeup, where he plans on chasing her.  All of this stuff.  Then the night begins and that is where I will stop because up to this point, it’s very smart and documentary style, but things change.

I haven’t ever seen a film do what this one did.  It was a pure masterpiece, and it sounds like a sequel is finally being made, and I couldn’t be happier.  I hope that they filmed some footage with Scott Wilson already, but they probably haven’t.  I think this is one of the ten most underrated horror films ever made.  Major props to the director, Scott Glosserman for taking a negative, like handheld footage, and turning it into a positive.  Great stuff all around.  Nathan Baesel as Leslie was amazing, and I have a soft spot for Todd, played by Britain Spellings.  Also, stick around for the credits.  You’ll be pleased.

Here’s a link to some of the references in the film.  Thank you IMDB!

Rating: 8.2 I may be underselling just how good this film is.  It’s not for everybody, the same as any film, but any horror fan should truly love this one.
