This movie has been considered one of the worst horror sequels ever. I get it. There is a lot to dislike here. I haven’t seen this since it first came out on video. I remember thinking it was a mess then, and I still think it’s a mess, but it does offer some positives that need to be acknowledged.
Some films shouldn’t have a sequel. Last month I worried about Hereditary getting a sequel. Look at The Last Exorcism and how bad that sequel was. For a sequel to work for Blair Witch, you had to think outside the box, right? So that is what they did. They continued building upon the mythology. And in that regard, this was a success. It expanded the legend and it also took some thinly veiled shots at society, especially the youth. People get sucked into dumb things.
The story even makes sense. When you consider that basically everything we saw had at least 2 different realities or perspectives, we can’t be sure what was and wasn’t real. That was actually kinda cool. The ambiguous ending where we don’t know for sure what the truth is, I like that. Either way, you can blame the witch, right?
The biggest problem is that the first half of this film is hard to get through. Yes, you need some of the info to enjoy the second half. I really didn’t need to see all the drinking and smoking weed. It was all kinda pathetic and boring. It felt very uninspiring. The first 20-30 minutes should have been so much more enjoyable. I think if they had made the first 30 minutes more enjoyable, by the time things got crazy, people would have really liked it. Just my opinion though.
This film has to be considered a failure. It only has a 4.0 on IMDB, and I am surprised it is that high. Probably due to dumbasses that claim to be witches or Wiccan. Still, I would like to try this again in another decade to see if I enjoy it any more than I did today because the last 30 minutes are really good. Also, loved the nudity. And everybody was a winner, tits and man ass!!
Rating: 5.0 I think I will watch this again someday. I am simply not in a rush. I acknowledge that there is something to enjoy here. The execution was very flawed though.
