I just had to review this movie I found on NetFlix. Surprisingly fun.
Here’s our premise, a student named Elizabeth, wants to do a study for a grant. She will record everything on her PC, including her webcam chats. She is going to visit a site called TheDen and it’s basically chat roulette. This teacher lady, Sally Winters pushed to help her get this grant.
The first chat was funny. We also had a nice shot of Elizabeth’s (Calling her Beth from this point forward to lessen my typing) ass in panties. She has a boyfriend Damien, and a computer nerd pal named Max. Lynn is her pregnant sister and Jenni is her “bestie”. God, I hate that term.
Damien wants to see her topless while he’s at work since she doesn’t want to leave the house to socialize. She almost does, but his pervert coworker spies on him, it was funny.
Some of the random people she chats with include: 2 Indian gentlemen wanting to learn how to pleasure a woman, a dude flapping his cock side to side repeatedly, a guy on his bike chatting and then wrecking, and my favorite, a puppet penis. Wait, there’s more! A guy dancing in a bunny costume, 2 oriental school girls sticking their tongues out, a cat licking itself, a guy who laughs, a guy who stares, and of course 4 young adult assholes who flip off the camera.
Well then we see a picture of a pretty girl, and then they receive a message saying not to turn off the camera or something. At night, we see that same one pop up and we hear cries and screams. Her screen name is pyagrl*16.
We saw a sexy bikini-clad person who ends up a bearded dude, a British lady with an amorous boyfriend who dances in his underwear, and a lady riding like a doll, it was not pleasant. Damien keeps trying to see her, but she turns him down…..for what. I will completely overkill that joke.
At night, a mysterious stranger approaches her bed. He pulls the covers off of her. The stranger starts to peel off the panties, and she flips out. Oh, it’s Damien. Clever. They make out in her bed. She turns off the webcam. But it was recorded of him giving her oral pleasure. And we see on the PC that this attachment is getting sent via email. Odd.
Her is Beth camming with her preggo sis who decorated the baby room with an astronaut because the guy at the store said that dinosaurs were too 90’s. Ohhh, she gets a chat from an African guy who needs a trustworthy partner as he is in Nigeria and is a beneficiary as he’s related to a prince, and well, we have all gotten that spam email at some point. That shit was funny. Hey, there’s pyagrl again, messaging Beth saying that they enjoyed watching Beth’s boyfriend lick her pussy. Their words not mine, but I so would have said pussy. Suddenly a video shows up of pyagrl and she has her mouth taped shut and a dude slams her head on a table and slits her throat. Shit got real.
Beth contacts the police, and they are saying’s a hoax, but she ain’t buying that. Max is also saying it’s a hoax. Max wants her to visit and entices her with his big dog who is awesome looking. She wants him to get into this pyagrl’s account to find out info.
Beth researches Pya’s recent contacts. We have an Asian dude who says he can make her cum so hard, a fat kid asking for her to show her titties, a fat lady laughing, and the best, 4 young adults pretending to play Russian Roulette, minus any Vietcong yelling Mow. Anyway, the first girl goes and no shot, second girl, boom, blood splatter, but it turned out as a prank video.
Damien talks to Beth about a zoo video and says that she was probably part of a prank. He gets in his car and she gets a call. We see a person in the backseat. He sits and the person reaches forward, the video goes out and Beth returns to see he isn’t there. The next day, Damien sends her the video. It’s the zoo video. Then he gets on, but things aren’t quite right, like he’s talking to her, but he isn’t. Then we see an empty room. I think it is his apartment. Yes, yes it was. She calls the cops, and say the apartment was empty, Beth is flipping out.
Beth’s PC is still on and we see that while Beth is at Damien’s apartment, Jenni gets a message from Beth to come over for a surprise. Obviously Beth’s account is being hacked. Jenni shows up, the door is open. She keeps getting messages from Beth, but nobody is there. The water is running. She is told to check the bed, where she finds a laptop. A guy comes from behind and knocks Jenni out. Noice.
Max is struggling to pinpoint where this account is from and Beth is bitchy towards him. Fucking women. Lynn wants Beth to see her but we see Beth laying in bed but responds saying she is busy and will see her soon.
Uh oh, the teacher Sally Winters is super fly pissed. All the board members were sent the video of her boyfriend going down on her. Sally is putting a hold on the project as it was sent from Beth’s acct. Well, Beth is a sad panda.
Beth is trying to talk to people who are on Damien’s friend list. This one bitch gives her a hard time, ends the chat and flags her. She finds a dude who is friends with Damien and this guy is a total wise-ass jerk. He leads her along, saying that Damien sent this guy a link, so he sends it to Beth. And the video is…..of the penis puppet again. Oh shit, that was funny. The guy says “I was just fucking with you. When you see him, tell him that he has a small dick.” Hilarious!!
Beth is trying to clean up the digitized video to make out the car scene with Damien and see the guy in the back seat. Time to call the cops. By the next day, they aren’t returning her call. Hey, a video request from Damien. It’s of videos this guy has that Beth has recorded into a creepy montage, saying there’s nothing you can do about it now. She is freaked out. Next, a video saying click if you want to see me. This causes all of her files to be erased, all videos, everything got erased from her PC thanks to the link. Her hard drive was wiped cleaned. Max can’t help her. He suggests maybe Damien is behind all of this, so Beth kicks out Max.
She messages Jenni, and asks her to write back, but no response. The next day, Jenni messages her and says “Hey I’m home>’ Beth shows up and says she’s been knocking. Jenni says to come in as the door is open. Beth calls Jenni and hears her phone ringing. Dark house, lights are not working. Beth finds Jenni all bloody in the bathtub and Jenni is suddenly gasping for air. Her wrists her cut. Beth calls 911.
Beth is home watching a video on how to load a 9mm Glock. The next day Lynn is messaging Beth saying to wake up sleepy. Then she sees a video, it’s somebody filming Lynn in her house. Beth calls 911 to come help her sister. We see this intruder creep in the kitchen grab a knife. Beth calls Lynn telling her to get out of the house, but Beth’s audio is fucked up. Lyn doesn’t get out in time and the guy gets her, ties her up. he puts a knife to her pregnant belly. He appears like he’s going to do something but hears the sirens and walks away casually and takes off the mask and drops the phone that he was recording with. This one investigator with a camera asks Lynn weird questions that upset her and then he records from a distance, Beth talking to another investigator, He leaves the house, is outside records Beth getting into a cop’s vehicle. We see this guy get into the car, and there’s his mask. Dun dun dun…
The one cop escorts her home and the guy with the camera follows them. A cop will be staying outside for her. She lots Lynn know that she’s ok. Max messages her saying Yo. She videos with him and it is dark room. There’s the investigator that she was talking to, he is in a house that looks trashed. The guy creeps up behind him and kills the investigator. Now on her camera, she sees a video feed of her live from behind her. Creepy.
The lights go out and she finds the cop chained up and dead. She goes to get out one door and there he is. She locks him out. She grabs a knife and he comes up from behind her. She knocks him down and stabs the shit outta him. She runs away down the street in full panic mode. Suddenly a masked individual snatches her. She wakes up in a dilapidated room, think the room from the original Saw. She is chained to the flood, but at least the chain is long…..for her pleasure. There’s a video monitor. She gets up close to it and we see her, and she this band attached really tight to her head with a light on it. She isn’t able to get it off. We now see in the corner, another window, and there’s Damien. She asks him if he knows where they are. He doesn’t know much. Now a video request from Max. He is in a room and the light is flashing. Damien tells her that it’s a recording. She watches as somebody uses plastic to suffocate Max. Damn strobe light fucking up my eyes. Damien leg mid-video of Max.
Now Damien is chat requestion her. Damien is getting his ass beat. He is getting dragged around the room. And the video goes off. Beth, you are aren’t yanking that chain out of the floor. A masked man comes in to get her, but she attacks him with the aforementioned chain and tries to choke him out with the chain. She succeeds. She uses the key to free herself. She grabs his knife. BUT she never looked under the mask and god that irritates the fuck out of me. Why wouldn’t you look to see who it was? She is out in the hallway, finds a blood-drenched room. This hallway has numerous room and it dark as fuck down here. Another guy. She closes the doors and uses the knife to prevent the doors from swinging open. Well, he is after her ass. It’s all dark and they build up the suspense. Suddenly we hear an air raid siren. I feel like Pyramid Head is due any moment. She attacks one masked person, asks where Damien is but gets no response. Another one is after her. She exits a door and is outside. 2 guys, no 3 guys chasing her but she has a hammer. a guy drives at her. He gets out to capture her, and he gets his wig pushed in. She takes off with the car. Driving like a maniac, only to be hit from the side.
She gets dragged away by 2 people.
We see a Brianna, the lady from England with the amorous boyfriend, she is logged in looking for people. She finds a guy who wants to talk about her boobs, and of course penis puppet. She gets a chat invite from Beth. Uh oh, still frame. Now we see action footage. Beth is lynched, the bucket kicked out from under her. She is flailing. But then is cut down after say 20 seconds. 2 masked guys there. She has tape over her mouth. The guys leave, as she lays whimpering on the floor. Suddenly somebody comes up and puts a bullet through her dome.
We zoom out and see that it was all part of this website that has various people’s death narrative and this creepy guy is watching. He can pay $99 to watch Brianne’s narrative. So he puts in his credit card info. Then his son comes in and he turns off the PC. End film.
So long story short, we have a college student who does a study on webchat practices, and she witnesses a murder and it spirals downward from there for her and those closest to her.
I really didn’t think much of this at first, but I gave it more time and became engrossed in it. Just trust me, this is a well-done horror flick despite all the bullshit. Certainly not a traditional film for the old school viewers, but you younger people should enjoy it. I would like to own this on blu ray, so it is pretty decent. I would give this a 7.0. I am really unsure, but what they did well, they did really well and that’s how you must approach horror most often. Is the premise dumb as hell in some places? Yeah, but I still feel that by and large, this went to its logical conclusions.
