Evil Dead II (1987)

This is the sequel to a beloved film and the middle child of the trilogy.

I have to be honest, when you watch this without any explanation and you have just finished the first one, the beginning is very odd. I wish there was better context, but it was 6 years later, so probably trying to bring people back into the fold. I enjoyed a lot of the humor, BUT at times, it got a little too much at times and it took me out of the vibe at times because I had hoped for more of the same as the first one. There were glimpses of the first one, and this is much closer to part 1 than part 3. Still, this has some absolutely ridiculous moments, both good and bad.

I like that the book is still central to the plot, and the skull knife. The whole evil Ash thing, especially with the hand. Anything involving his hand, the chainsaw, or a vice grip worked well for me. The story with Annie’s parents was fine for me. It almost sticks out like a sore thumb to actually have a plot after all the gore and sight gags. Bobby Joe, I can only say that her attire was spot on. I enjoyed her forest scene. The Henrietta stuff was unique, but not my favorite.

If I had a complaint, it would be that I loved the tone of the first one so much, I actually hated seeing it go for more humor. It’s a dual-edged sword because I do dig the horror, but the horror fan in me really would have enjoyed a scary Evil Dead trilogy. I think that this works well as one of the best comedy horror films out there, BUT I could have used something more sinister at points. Oh, and the ending, I wasn’t a huge fan, but that’s what they wanted to do, so who am I criticize? I guess you can only do so much in the house, right? It’s not like you would burn down the cabin and build a new place over it, so the time travel made sense for the story. It’s not a criticism I guess so much as preference.

Final rating: 6.7 It just isn’t as good as it’s predecessor, simple as that. It was very good, and that is a minor victory.
