The Howling (1981)

I’m sorry, I tried Return of the Living Dead 5, but 2 and a half minutes in, I realized it had continuity with part 4. I couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t handle watching it. It made me so mad, so I moved on to something more palatable.

So we have Dee Wallace in this one. She’s a TV reporter, and she is trying to get a story, but a serial killer is after her.  He comes at her in a porn shop. It obviously is traumatizing. By the way, she looks really good in this, compared to her other big film roles. In the porn shop, there was a porno on, and there was a topless chick, so we have boobs, and I am absolutely counting it. Her watching a porn is still an actress who is topless for my viewing pleasure.

So her doctor suggests that she goes on a vacation to get away from shit and try to regain her mental well being. She gets there, people are nice, although one dude went a little nutty, but it was decent, aside from him. This movie is slow as fuck. I’m going to not give play by play.

Well hello, full-frontal nudity on the best looking girl in the movie. That’s sweet and the wolves are howling. I’m talking actual wolves, not making a perverted joke. This whole scene was supposed to be sexy, but now they are werewolves doing it. I just lost any hope of getting a semi.

OK, I just finished it. SO let me sum this up. Dee Wallace is stressed after the whole serial killer thing. Her Dr. has her to go to this colony to get away from shit and get some therapy. On the colony, everybody turns into werewolves and the doctor is in on it. There’s a sex scene. They try to burn the werewolves which is just stupid, you can’t do that. Finally, Dee Wallace gets bit. While back on TV, she transforms into a werewolf. I think that is a fair representation of this movie.

In conclusion, it wasn’t a bad film, it was very early 80’s, they didn’t really perfect horror til mid 80’s, so this was ahead of its time in some regards. The special effects were good by the standards of that year. 4 months later An American Werewolf in London would make this movie look second rate. What are the odds of 2 good werewolf movies in the same calendar year? I fully admit this was a tad too slow-moving for me. In all fairness, my focus has been off lately. It may have something to do with all of these movies as of late, who knows. I want to give this a 5.9. It wasn’t great while watching it, but to reflect upon it, the story as a whole was good if that makes sense.

Final Rating: 5.9
