Serial Mom (1994)

I have never seen this film. My friend Kristie has recommended this to me numerous times. I even bought it on VUDU. But it always slipped my mind or I would get busy doing different things. Tonight, I asked her for suggestions, this came up again. So being the adequate friend that I am, let’s do this.

John Waters directed this film and Kathleen Turner is the clear-cut star of this. There are some other cool names involved including Sam Waterston of Law & Order fame, Ricki Lake, Matthew Lillard who was in Scream, Thir13een Ghosts, and is now the voice of Shaggy in most Scooby-Doo projects, and even Traci Lords, the former adult film star who is actually a good actress. I highly recommend her in Excision. I think that is currently free to watch on the Tubi TV app. I’m gonna try to sit back and watch this more than worry about the play-by-play because I have heard how funny this is. My blogging style doesn’t always translate well with comedy.

Start Film

John Waters was also in Excision now that I think about it. Also, Suzanne Somers and even Chesty Morgan. I am intrigued. Ricki Lake was pretty back in the day. Woah, reference to Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. If you consider yourself a fan of horror, go watch that film!! I’m already loving the obsession over gum and Misty’s character. That phone call with Dottie Hinkle was fucking hilarious. Stealing someone’s parking spot when they are waiting is truly a fucked up situation.

“Chip, you know how I hate the brown word.” That sex scene was so well done. Blaming Dottie for breaking the Franklin Mint egg was great. Traci Lords is looking good here. Kathleen’s facial expressions are really good here. Hahaha, a Don Knott’s painting. Hahaha, John Waters doing Ted Bundy’s voice. The whole pussy thing is hilarious. Just the overemphasis every time. Damn, Chesty was uhmmmm, large and in charge. A little too large for my tastes, but whatever. Now I want chicken.

The music in the Chesty porn is great. I know it’s weird, but I love to watch older porn just for the music. I would absolutely buy old porn soundtracks. Ralph just eating dessert, that looks good too. And Scottie, the fuck kind of jacking off session is that? I’m laughing, just so ridiculous. I feel like scissor throwing is far more difficult than most any other throwing weapon. You’re supposed to run with scissors, not throw with them.

How many cop cars do they have? I think I counted 9 or 10. Everybody’s reaction to Beverly being named a suspect in the car. She smiling at the car next to them, classic. I’ve never seen a sneeze cause so much commotion. Sloppy and Gus are also solid. The red car reminded me just a bit of Christine. I also just read that this was Matthew Lillard’s first film role. Leatherface on the TV. Was that the original TCM? I think so.

The sun will come out tomorrow!! I remember singing that for one of the videos on the Malarkey Show. Hahaha, the decision to use a leg of lamb instead of the cliched knife was brilliant. The dog licking the feet just grossed me out. I know you rarely read that something grosses me out in all of these horror movies. Feet licking, that’s a line in the sand that you do not cross.

The Camel Lips thing is crude but quite funny. Good for L7 doing this. Hahaha, I love how normally Scottie sounds while getting set on fire. The singing on the bus, haha. Pissing off Hinkle was solid. The obsession over the white shoes is hilarious in its own right. Chicks with Dicks magazine, Gus and Sloppy kill it every time they’re on screen. Is that Suzanne in court? It sure is. Mr. Pickles is such a pervert. I enjoyed Step By Step. I have no shame in this.

I love that after being declared innocent, she still attacks the white shoes juror. And then she proceeds to snap at Suzanne Somers.

End Film

Okay, I am going to pay this a very high compliment mainly because I can’t think of a better comparison. The comedy here reminded me in a lot of ways of Married With Children, which was one of the 3 best sitcoms of the ’90s. The comedy at times wasn’t as low-brow or crude, but there were crude moments. The matter-of-fact way that scenes played out was reminiscent of some of the best moments on Married With Children. There probably is a better analogy out there, but I feel good about offering up that kind of praise. My sense of humor was born out of Married With Children and The Simpsons.

This was a genuinely funny movie where I may have laughed out loud over 10 times. It was fun, refreshing, and a little dated, but not too bad. Everybody was well cast. Kathleen Turner won the role because Susan Sarandon wanted too much money and all the other actresses asked for rewrites or other nonsense. Kathleen just accepted it as it and was probably really nice to work with.

If I were to offer a critique, it was that there was like a 15-minute lull after the church scene, for me, at least. It wasn’t bad, but I hit the wall. It could also be because I am tired. I am not going to complain due to many variables. I get easily sidetracked at times, so that could have been a Kent problem and not a fault of the movie, or maybe there was a tiny lull.

Thank you Kristie for trying to get me to watch this. I wish I had done it sooner. But this was the perfect pick me up after Critters Attack.

Final Rating – 7.1 – Comedies are tough to rate because most get old after so many viewings. I have no idea if the same jokes will play out well. Some should. I also thought this was a very creative approach and I appreciate that. If I watch it again, I may return and alter this rating. But I am very happy with it at this moment.
