Splatter University (1984)

Apparently, this film was mentioned in one of the Scream films, I think part 2.  Honestly, I just wanted something quick to watch before my podcast and this checked all the boxes of something I could really enjoy.  Sometimes you get these things right, and other times you fail.  Surprisingly, I didn’t fail.

This is a college slasher flick from the early 80’s.  The budget is low.  Most of the deaths involve a closeup on a shirt and a knife stabbing it with blood coming out.  I’m not even mad about that.  The acting, oh the acting is really what you’d expect from this era in this type of film.  Hell, the killer’s identity wasn’t a surprise in any way. I won’t spoil it, but the reveal was as amazing as you’d hope for.

There are some great scenes.  Early on one of the girls tells her friend that she hasn’t had her period in a month and is worried about being pregnant.  One of the college guys is being a dick and she blows him off so he accuses her of “being on the rag”.  Stuff like that is hilarious in its simplicity.  My favorite scene is at the drive-in.  This guy and girl roll up to the booth and it’s $9 for the both of them.  The guy is bitching at how outrageous the cost is.  Then he asks the girl for money to pay for it.  This fucking guy, right?  So the girl gives him $10, the girl in the booth gives him a dollar back.  What does the guy do?  He pockets the dollar instead of giving the girl back her change.  I thought that was the best thing.  Then while during the movie, the guy sees someone so he goes hunting for him.  Minor spoiler here, but the girl gets her throat slit.  The guy returns to the car and just hops in the back and starts talking to her.  She doesn’t respond, naturally, and he starts bitching her out.  This is the sort of stuff I love about horror.

No, this isn’t some great film.  It’s a cheesy 80’s slasher and it’s fun.  The fun factor is alive and makes this worth a watch, especially if you have friends over as just something to have on while chatting or drinking or at a party.

Rating: 5.0 – I don’t think I will ever watch this again, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it if someone wanted to watch it.  I am assuming that I won’t,  so that’s why 5 is the limit.  I’d definitely recommend it if you are into these type of films.  It’s exactly what you think it is, so if you get mad at it, that’s on your for being a jackass.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
