Stoic (2009)

Stoic is not your traditional horror movie.  Based on the story, while it is more drama than anything, the things that happen are more brutal than some horror films, so I felt that it belonged.  I’m going to just spoil this whole film, and if you want to avoid it, scroll down to the rating.

SPOILERS

This is a simple story about four guys in prison: Mitch, Harry (Edward Furlong), Peter, and Jack.  It all starts with these guys playing cards.  Mitch is winning and says he will put up some cigarettes but the loser has to eat a tube of toothpaste.  Mitch loses and he refuses to eat the toothpaste.  This part irritated me because although I can’t imagine it being the most enjoyable experience, if that was the wager, then suck it up.  It’s not going to kill you.  It may upset your stomach, but that’s the point.  When Mitch continually refuses, the other 3 guys get pissed off and eventually beat him a bit and force it in him.  Now Mitch is sick, and Peter then offers to make him a drink to help him feel better.  It’s like saltwater and a pepper.  Mitch tries to drink it due to threats, but he can’t finish it.  So Peter then gives him a cup with piss and shit remnants, I guess, and Mitch tries, but can’t drink it.  This enrages Jack who insists that Mitch eats his own vomit.  Mitch tries, but can’t do well, as expected.  Later on, things have calmed down a bit and Mitch hits the button to call the guards for help, but the guys catch him and tell the guards that everything is fine.  Seriously, the guards never checked on the situation.  Mitch has now truly enraged the guys.  From here, he is forced to drink piss, get fucked in the ass, then sodomized by a mop handle, and then has that handle placed in his mouth.  The guys decide that they are fucked if the guards find out so they tell Mitch that he’s going to commit suicide.  So they set it up and hang Mitch.  The film is partly seeing the action and part of it is the three guys explaining what happened and their side of things.

END SPOILERS

The acting is pretty good here.  The whole experience is apparently based on a true life experience, which is all the more horrifying.  This film is a series of one uncomfortable moment followed by another.  Mitch was apparently a good dude and only serving 6 months for vagrancy and resisting arrest.

I liked how this was filmed and presented.  It was just horrific enough without going too extreme, in the send that it could have gone further with the imagery.  I don’t recommend this for anybody who can’t handle extreme violence that feels real.  This isn’t like Jason Voorhees type violence, this feels much more real and intimate.  Knowing that something like this happened if very disturbing.  This is also a great reason why 4 people shouldn’t share the same cell.

Rating: 4.9 – This film may deserve higher, but because I would never watch this again, I can’t give it about a 5.  If you are a sick person like myself, the curiosity factor will be in play.  It delivers in that regard.  This is not a film to watch with someone else, in my opinion.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
