The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

I liked the original The Strangers, but always preferred ILS (Them).  I was surprised that it took this long for a sequel.  In hindsight, I wish this never got made.

A family of four, Cindy (Christina Hendricks), Mike, Kinsey, and Luke, go on a vacation or trip before the family is sending Kinsey to boarding school.  Wait, go ahead, predict who the final person will be.  Yeah.  This is the most cliche riddled film.  None of the 4 characters have much of a redeeming quality to them, nor are they interesting.  This plays out how you’d expect.  There are times that I was either shaking my head or actually put my head in hands in disbelief.

This is just bad.  I am sick of satire in horror as an excuse.  If you’re going to make a horror, just make a god damn horror movie.  You’re not George Romero, you’re not Wes Craven, so stop it.  This is the excuse modern horror gives when people say how bad or cliche it is.

Out of all of my gripes, including the end was so beyond silly.  That part felt like it was genuinely mocking the horror genre, I will say that, but it was dumb.  The worst part was toward the end at the pool scene with Total Eclipse of the Heart playing.  I have been waiting years for this song to be used in a horror film.  And I had so many ideas on how to use it effectively.  Then this movie comes along.  This song should be when someone is being hunted down, preferably inside.  A funhouse would be perfect, but there are other scenarios.  Or when the final girl is looking and finding all of her dead friends while being nervous.  It would be so good.  Or in a room full of mannequins or something from Silent Hill.  Why did they pick this song for this scene?  It’s just a fight in a pool.  Like, the song served so little purpose.  I don’t get it.  I’d really like to know why.

Rating: 2.5 – I don’t recommend this to anybody.  There is no redeeming quality in this film.  And I swear, if somebody says “Well that’s the point”, I will fucking backhand you.  Avoid this fans of the first film or fans of horror or movies in general.  This isn’t even good background noise.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
