Survival of the Dead (2009)

The final Romero zombie film is a mixed bag to say the least. Do you remember the National Guard guys in Diary of the Dead?  Well, this is their story.  I actually wish they had connected more films in a similar fashion.

We get some backstory on this island inhabited by the O’Flynn and Muldoon families.  This is like the zombie version of the Hatfields and McCoys.  The Muldoon’s forced most of the O’Flynn’s off of the island, except Jane and Janet, which is Patrick’s 2 daughters.  I think that they were the only 2 that stayed.  Fast forward to present day, and this group of National Guards ends up getting this teenage boy with them in their group and they try to figure out where to head next.  The kid suggests that they head south and try to make it to an island.  So that’s the plan.  They meet Patrick O’Flynn and the men who left with him.  They try to kill the guards, but the guards kill all of his men except for Patrick.  They cross the water to the island and find out that Sheamus Muldoon has been trying to condition the zombies to eat something other than humans.  So it harkens back to Day of the Dead, in that regard.  There ends up being a showdown, lots of people die, the usual.

This was the worst of the six, in my opinion.  Some of the acting was really good.  The material was not good at all.  I am saddened that this was Romero’s last film. This was cheesy too often.  The motives for some of the characters were less than desirable.   The guy who played Patrick was also in The Void.  That was something I didn’t know.  I don’t have a lot to say about this one.  You’re only really seeking this out if you’re a fan of one of the actors, or more likely to see the final Romero film.  No matter what I say to you, it’s not going to influence your decision.  Thankfully, it’s a shorter film.

Rating: 3.7 – I really didn’t care for the story at all in this one.  It brought everybody down with it.  That final shot was also absolutely absurd as hell.  I can’t say that I recommend this for any rhyme or reason.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
