Housebound (2014)

This was on Netflix and has a 6.8 on IMDB, let’s do it.

So we have this dude and chick trying to break into an ATM. He has a sledgehammer. It bounces back upon impact and knocks him out. She used an explosive, the alarm goes off, she drags him back to the car, then the car gets stuck, they get caught. The girl’s name is Kylie. Her sentence is to spend 8 months at her mom’s. Decent sentence all things considering.

Her mom rear-ends the transporting car in the driveway. She is oblivious or did it intentionally. She gets the ankle bracelets. Her mom is named Miriam, and I think her dad or some older dude is Graeme. Kylie is a bossy bitch who gives lots of evil looks at her mom. Kylie listens to the radio, hears her mom calling in to some guy talking about supernatural stuff happening in the house. She tells a story about going to the basement and turning around and seeing something that went back into the darkness, like a white tattered sheet. Apparently Kylie used to be afraid of stuff too. Kylie just took the longest piss. She also may have heard something.

The next day. Hey, they have dial-up. Damn. She goes to get a book from the basement, she gets creeped out. Now Kylie is talking with some dude, like a psychologist. We find out that she doesn’t have much contact with her real dad. Kylie is a lazy bitch who is disrespectful to her mother. She just watches TV. Her mom wanted the TV for an hour and Kylie just turns the TV up. Total bitch. Kylie falls asleep watching TV, and there was a moving shadow. The computer is on, I assume that it was off. She turns it off. She wakes up to her phone going off in the basement. She goes down, the light goes off. A shadow rises behind her but then gone. She gets out a lantern-like she’s Bray Wyatt. A Jesus statue covered in a sheet falls down on her. She gets freaked out, and a hand grabs her ankle. Her comes down to see what all the raucous is. Now there is a noise upstairs and a shadow, and Graeme works the night shift. The parole officer (Amos) walks down the stairs and Kylie beats the hell out of him until he reveals himself. This guy is funny. He checks the basement. Miriam tells him that she thinks the place is haunted.

Amos is pumped and starts using a voice recorder trying to talk to the spirit. Sooo Amos is a guy who knows his ghost shit. He plays back the tape, nothing. He notices a temp change in the next room. Amos is going to do some surveillance cameras. Poor Amos just got a jolt from the wall. Kylie is a non-believer. Kylie wakes up to some voice talking to her, and it’s this bear toy. So she punches it, and it tells her to stop tickling him. She put it in the fire. In the shower, she freaks out, and the bear is in there. Amos is done with this shit.

She meets with her counselor/psychologist and tells him about the haunting. He gives her some book/pamphlet to read. So she reads it and a door open in her room. She removes the door. So now a smaller door in the closet opens. She finds her old toys, pictures, and tap shoes. So she starts to do a routine. Graeme scares her. He was hoping that she would help him, and she was a bitch, then goes to help him. Graeme is awesome. He opens up to her about his parents and considers Kylie like a daughter. He reveals that this place wasn’t a bed and breakfast like her mom said it. It was like a church-owned halfway house. Some girl Lizzie had been killed and stabbed 67 times.

Kylie asks her lawyer to try to get her out of the house, and he says that is unlikely. Her counselor is there. Kylie flips out, exits the room, and the lights go out. Haha. It comes on briefly, and there was a figure in a white tattered sheet. When the lights are on again, the counselor has been pretty fucked up and hurt. The cops obviously think that it was Kylie, but she and her mom say it was a ghost. Kylie decides to run away and Amos finds her and slaps her. He says that Lizzie chose to communicate with Kylie and that maybe she should listen. So back home she goes.

In the basement, she tells Lizzie that if she has something to say, to just say it. Lots of noises from up top and travel to the basement and the furnace door opens. She takes a sledgehammer to a pipe and finds a retainer in the pipe. She then hears the phone rings upstairs. She looks and checks out a heating vent. Inside is a box. The box has a bag of weed and some jewelry. I guess it’s dentures, not a retainer. Kylie theorizes that Lizzie was a thief and that maybe somebody caught on and maybe killed Lizzie. They wonder if it’s their creepy neighbor, who happens to have a denture. She wants to see if the dentures match.

So Amos gives her the go-ahead to break into this dude’s place. Smart. She can’t find it but tells Amos that she wants a few more seconds in this fucking dump. She finds him and tries to take the denture from his mouth. Seriously. This wakes him up. She goes running as does Amos. Amos gets caught in an animal leg trap. So she covers up Amos with a truck cab. Dude is out and chasing her. She goes to her house, and Amos calls and tells her that he is chasing her. She goes and hides in a closet. He’s just outside the door, so she has like garden shears and stabs him, but it was actually Graeme. Graeme is still alive in the hospital, and Kylie is cleaning up around the house.

Amos breaks back into this dude’s house at night after he leaves. He finds newspaper articles on Lizzie’s death. Odd, right? SO they are leading us to believe that this guy is the killer. My guess is that this guy knew Lizzie, like a father, brother, boyfriend. This guy finds Amos in his house. They have a confrontation. We just got so much backstory, as this guy took in a kid named Eugene who could fix things well, but had a screw loose. So it wasn’t the neighbor guy.

AT home, Kylie is trying to put away the vacuum and hears a phone ring. She accidentally breaks a hole in the closet wall and enters looking for the phone. In Amos’ car, the bear starts talking to him. He finds a tape in the bear. It is of a girl talking about her friend who lives in the wall. Kylie just found somebody watching TV on the other side of a wall, Eugene. The person attacks Kylie, they tussle, she falls through a floor, keep in mind that she is in between walls. She gets back in the house, goes outside, and this person his chase. He bangs on the truck window, and she drives off. Amos comes from the other direction and enters the house looking for her.

She goes to the cops and tries telling him what happened, but this guy is so slow, like comically slow. Her mom comes home. Now there are 2 officers and they want to call probations. Amos shows up and tells the cops that there is a guy in her walls. Her mom puts away the food, and this is getting fun. The cops don’t believe her. Dennis, her counselor, is there, and he mentions her going off her meds as she is bipolar. He suggests that she has multiple personalities. She says that if it’s a delusion, how come her mom saw it, and Miriam says that she’s not sure what she saw.

Kylie rips open the hole in the wall in the kitchen. Kylie theorizes that Dennis was involved in the halfway house and the ghost was trying to warn Kylie. Miriam provides a distraction for as long as she can. Kylie finds documents about Dennis and he was involved in some incidents. Now the officers are missing and Dennis went to the bathroom.

So Kylie has a knife, and a grater covering her left hand. Kylie starts accusing Dennis. Dennis goes on the attack, and this suddenly gets silly. Why did this just get so over the top silly with Dennis fighting Kylie, then a laundry basket over his head? Eugene gets involved. They find a dead cop. This is like People Under The Stairs. Kylie cut her ankle bracelet, and Amos shows up and Dennis gets the door. Kylie is yelling from between the walls to let Amos know that it’s Dennis. This has gotten silly. Dennis just knocked out of killed Amos. Kylie follows Eugene up to his hiding room. Kylie also had her leg stabbed, I forgot to mention that.

So they are in Eugene’s room, he has drawn pictures of her whole life, it’s crazy cool. He also has pictures he drew of Lizzie. He never told anybody, he was afraid that they would take him away, he was only a kid. Bloody hell, Dennis just stabbed Eugene through the wall. Damnit. While he is running his mouth, Kylie tosses Eugene’s chamberpot in Dennis’ face. They escape to the roof. Dennis has the tracking device of Kylie’s bracelet. He goes after her, but Miriam shoves him, Miriam slips, and Kylie saves her and knocks Dennis off the roof. Miriam goes to call the cops, Dennis knocks her out and is strangling Miriam with a phone cord. Eugene wakes up Kylie and gives her a carving fork, and this is attached to some wire, and Eugene flips on the electricity once the fork is in Dennis’ throat/jaw region. This causes his head to explode.

7 Months Later

It’s time to remove the ankle bracelet. There’s Amos, he looks well, Graeme looks healthy and happy. Miriam is recording this special occasion and then the video camera turns off. Of Kylie yells at Eugene. And they laugh and…

End Film

This was a really well-done film, and it had a People Under The Stairs flair to it, but being wholly original. The creepy neighbor, the Eugene stuff, trying to unravel the mystery, everything worked well, until say the last 15 minutes, once Dennis goes bad and it gets very cheesy, but that isn’t the worst thing ever, but I felt it took a bit away from the overall tone. Still, I woke up still liking it and will watch it again.

Final rating: 6.7
